Its that time of year again when it pays to be vigilant when it comes to the cold and more importantly frost and ice!
It’s not anywhere near cold enough to freeze at the moment but the weather may turn soon, below are a few tips that might help save you a burst pipe or frost issue.
If your property is empty make sure that the water is drained down or the heating is on low. It will usually be a requirement of your insurer that you regularly visit the property and in cold weather the frequency of this should increase for your own benefit.
If you have recently installed an outside tap, make sure that the copper pipe is insulated to avoid a burst. This is when the water in the pipe freezes and expands cracking the copper pipework and then when it thaws it freely runs out.
If you have changed to a condensing boiler, make sure the overflow pipe is property insulated. If not the slow drip drip will freeze over and will make your boiler cut out. You can use insulation foam or if the boiler cuts out try pouring hot water over the plastic pipe to assist melting and then free flow.
