This is the first year Norwich’s “Golden Triangle” hasn’t made the cut – not because it’s got any less desirable, but because, frankly, we wanted a change (and we figured you’d probably got the message). We think there are other lovely places in Norwich, where the premiums are not quite so high and where the quality of life, dare we say it, may even be lightly better. Thorpe is one such place, and is drawing an increasing number of buyers.
A suburb to all intents and purposes (although administratively a small town in its own right), it lies to the East of the City Centre, on the right side for the railway station and with easy access to the Norfolk Broads. It’s hilly for these parts, the River Yare runs through the centre, and some of the original village of Thorpe remains along the Yarmouth Road. The amenities are good, with a Sainsbury’s and riverside pubs. Thorpe St. Andrew School and Sixth Form is rated outstanding by Ousted, and nearby Whitlingham Country Park has a lake for sailing and waterspouts. Family-sized grade II listed cottages can be had for about £425.000.
What the locals say: We are sailing (boating/rowing/windsurfing).
Why we love it: Nestled nicely between Norwich and the Broads.
